Discover how Tata Motors is steering India’s public transportation toward a greener, smarter future with its cutting-edge electric buses.
India’s urban population is projected to swell by nearly 328 million by 2047, creating mounting challenges in air pollution and congestion. To meet these challenges, it's imperative to build accessible, clean and comfortable mass transit systems. Tata Motors, in collaboration with government bodies and industry partners, is spearheading this transformation through its electric buses initiative.
Government Incentives Fueling Electric Momentum
The Government of India has played a significant role in accelerating e-bus adoption. Starting with the inclusion under the FAME Scheme in 2015 and the launch of the PM-E-bus Sewa Programme - targeting 169 cities - this institutional support continues to pave the way for electric public transportation.
From Tech to Training
Tata Motors isn’t just building electric buses - it’s constructing the full ecosystem needed for their success. This includes advanced battery and safety technologies, intelligent connected systems for fleet operations, and charging infrastructure backed by digital management tools. Moreover, drivers and technicians receive specialized training in EV operations, maintenance, and customer experience enhancement.
Sustainability in Action
Tata’s deployment of over 3,300 electric buses across 10 cities has resulted in more than 21 crore kilometres of service - with over 95% operational uptime - and a reduction of more than 1.23 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Reliable, Inclusive and Safe
Built on the Starbus and Ultra platforms, Tata’s 7m, 9m and 12m e-buses undergo rigorous testing under extreme conditions. These reliable electric buses boast low operational costs and energy consumption, making them compelling for State Transport Undertakings and private fleet operators alike.
Seamless Operations
From thoughtfully constructed depot charging stations to smart systems for route and depot management, Tata’s TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Limited (TSCMSL) ensures smooth 24×7 operations. Their IT stack includes intelligent transport management, prognostics and real-time tracking, keeping uptime high and operations efficient.
Intercity Expansion: The Magna EV MoU with GEMS
Taking its electric mass mobility vision further, Tata Motors signed a landmark MoU with Green Energy Mobility Solutions (GEMS) to supply 100 Magna EV intercity coaches. Announced at Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 in Chennai, the fully electric Magna EV offers a range of up to 300 km per charge, seats 44 passengers, and includes modern safety features like Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
Tata’s electric bus portfolio also includes Starbus EV and Ultra EV models for intra-city usage. Impressively, over 3,600 electric buses are already operating across 11 cities - clocking more than 34 crore km - and supported by Tata’s Fleet Edge platform for diagnostics, tracking, and fleet optimization.
From intra-city to intercity travel, Tata Motors is pioneering a transition to sustainable, efficient public transport through electric buses. By combining advanced technology, infrastructure, training and strategic partnerships, Tata ensures that E-buses are not only viable but vital to India’s cleaner future.
